When Mazda started it's American LeMan Series program, it dropped one of its iconic rotary engines in the back of a Lola P2 prototype and went to town. Sadly, the rotary doesn't have the stones to keep up with the Porsches and (now) Acuras. In response, last year, they swapped the rotary for the turbocharged 2.3 liter inline-4 MZR-R engine. That's the racing version of the package driving the
Heart of Gold. So, naturally, when the
2008 car was unveiled, with some new sponsorship assistance, I paid attention:
